You don’t need us here at Goose Euro to tell you that the brake system is the most important safety system on your car, truck, or utility vehicle. This is why it’s a good rule of thumb to have the brake system inspected every 12,000 miles. This allows our experienced and certified technicians to replace brake parts that are going bad. Brake trouble is more common in vehicles that are not serviced properly. Here are six signs your brake system needs to be repaired.
1. ABS or Brake Dashboard Light
Your vehicle’s dashboard may give you a warning if the brake system is suffering. You probably already know this but the ABS light is the warning light for the anti-lock brake system. The Brake light lets you know the parking brake is set and alerts you of trouble outside of the ABS.
2. Strange Noises While Braking
If you hear strange noises when you apply the brakes, the brake system needs to be serviced at a minimum. For example, if the brakes scrape when you press down on the brake pedal, you need new brake pads. The brakes shouldn’t squeal or squeak, either.
3. Wobbling/Shaking While Braking
Wobbling or shaking when you apply the brakes is a sign that the rotor surfaces have warped. Generally, these surfaces need to be recut every 60,000 miles. Wobbling can also be a sign that there is road debris stuck in the brake system parts; specifically, the calipers.
4. Leaking Red or Brown Fluid
If your automobile is leaking red or brown fluid, your brake system might be leaking. Brake fluid is normally brown, but there are some brands that come in red. Usually, the brakes will leak behind the tires. You may also end up with a leaking master cylinder.
5. A Soft and Sinking Brake Pedal
If your brake pedal is soft and sinking to the floorboard when you press down on it, the master cylinder may need to be replaced. This is also a sign that your brake lines need to be bled because they have air in them.
6. The Smell of Overheating Brakes
Finally, you should never drive your automobile if the brake system is overheating. The reason why is that the brakes will fail once the system gets too hot. Odors such as burning carpet or burning chemicals are a sign that your brake system is too hot.
Goose Euro in San Antonio, TX, would be happy to inspect your brakes if you are having any of the problems listed above. Give us a call today.
